The CAN-based protocol CANopen is the standard for open networking of sensors, actuators and controllers in the industrial field. The primary goals in its development were to achieve flexibility of the individual devices and compatibility beyond OEM proprietary limits.
CANopen applications are also found in areas that at first glance appear unrelated to the industrial control engineering field. In particular these include tractors and machinery, railway and marine transportation, and door controllers.
The CANopen specifications are maintained and further developed by the international users' and manufacturers organization CiA (CAN in Automation). Besides containing a description of communication properties of a CANopen system (Communication profile) they also include descriptions of a number of specific device types (device profiles).
